This article raises the issue of whether civil liberties are truly being violated with the ongoing NYPD surveillance of Muslims in this country. Some say no, by pointing out that sheer numbers indicate that one’s affiliation with the Muslim identity automatically renders him or her as a viable terrorist suspect. Yet, as this article points out, an approach that is wholly unsystematic, bereft of any adequate “training”, or devoid of any crucial boundaries with respect to individual privacy, is a blatant violation of people’s rights. Not only is the surveillance a product of unregulated and oft abused infringement on Muslims’ civil liberties, it also actively instigates a population that is already heavily marginalized in mainstream American society.
